What is Scarification And Why Should I Scarify My Lawn?
The build up of moss in your lawn can do a number of things, it can restrict the sunlight getting deep into the grass, it will stop essential fertiliser, water and oxygen from getting to the roots, where they nurture and feed the grass to keep it looking luscious and green. This article looks at a process called Scarification which is essential to the maintenance of a good lawn

What Is Scarification?
Scarification is the mechanical removal of built up moss ( aka ‘thatch’) from the surface (and below) of the lawn.
This build up is a natural occurrence that if left unchecked can cause severe harm to the lawn.
It causes the lawn to become mossy and spongy to the touch.
It can effectively strangle the grass, reducing the amount of water, air and essential nutrients getting to the roots.
If left unchecked the lawn could effectively die.
Scarification is carried out using a state of art special machine that removes the surface moss and built up thatch thats collected deep in your lawn.
Scarification is an essential part of your annual lawn care program.
Paul Gardner – Hertford Lawn Care
Best carried out in autumn and winter ( although it can be done at any time) if your lawn is feeling spongy or looks mossy, it’s time to scarify your lawn.
Its also recommended that you have your lawn aerated before scarification
Is Raking A Lawn Just As Effective?
If the moss build up is minor then a good rake with a spring tined lawn rake should remove a fair bit of the problem moss.
If the moss and thatch has been allowed to build up, regular raking will not completely cure the problem as it is only effective on the surface.
The only option is mechanical scarification, this specialist piece of kit uses heavy duty flails to mechanically remove the build up of moss, dead grass and other unwanted thatch from not just the surface but deep down into the lawn itself..
This process need to be done by a trained professional, severe cases of moss build up sometimes require two visits – To try and do it all in one go could potentially harm the lawn by removing too much healthy grass alongside the moss.
All rubbish is bagged and removed, unless you have a compost bin or heap, if so we will place the waste organic matter on there for you
We will assess your lawn and once we have calculated the severity of the problem, will come up with a treatment plan to suit you and your lawn.

How Will My Lawn Look After Scarification?
Immediately after the treatment your lawn will look slightly worse for wear, it might look patchy, even discoloured in places – DO NOT WORRY, this is quite usual and will disappear as healthy grass begins to regrow and replace the trapped moss and thatch.
